The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is conducted annually by the Union Public Service Commission to recruit officers for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Revenue Service (IRS), and over 20 other Group A and Group B central services. It is widely regarded as one of the most competitive examinations in the world. The process has three stages: a qualifying Preliminary examination (objective, two papers), a Main examination (nine descriptive papers, of which two are qualifying), and a Personality Test (Interview). Final ranking is based on Mains + Interview marks only — Prelims marks are not counted toward the merit list. Selected candidates undergo training at LBSNAA, Mussoorie before being posted across India.
