About this exam
The Staff Selection Commission Multi Tasking Staff (SSC MTS) and Havaldar (CBIC & CBN) Examination is one of the largest central government recruitment drives, offering thousands of Group C (non-gazetted, non-ministerial) posts across central government offices, ministries, departments, attached and subordinate offices spread throughout India. The examination is open to Class 10 pass candidates between 18–27 years (with age relaxation of 3 years for OBC, 5 years for SC/ST, and 10 years for PwBD). The 2026 cycle is expected to fill approximately 10,000 vacancies including Multi Tasking Staff (MTS) posts in various ministries and Havaldar posts in Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) and Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN). The selection process consists of a single Computer Based Test (CBT) with two sessions: Session I (Numerical & Mathematical Ability + Reasoning Ability & Problem-Solving; 60 questions, 60 marks, 45 minutes) and Session II (General Awareness + English Language & Comprehension; 75 questions, 75 marks, 45 minutes). There is no negative marking in MTS 2026, making it one of the most accessible competitive exams. NE India candidates benefit from reservation quotas and a dedicated NE region preference for posting. The Havaldar posts under CBIC require additionally a physical efficiency test (PET/PST) after the CBT.
